## The switch from 300mm silicon wafers to 450mm will be complex and expensive

Since the late 1990s the semiconductor industry has been making chips on 300mm silicon wafers. Now a change is coming as the industry prepares to switch to a 450mm standard.

Every wafer transition requires enormous R&D investment by manufacturers and suppliers, and close collaboration among all sectors of supply chain to ensure a unified, coordinated transition. This will be especially true for the move to 450mm, which will coincide with many other device scaling and materials integration challenges, according to SEMI®, the global industry association for the micro- and nano-electronics industries.

## 450mm transition forum

SEMICON West will host a special forum on this transition on July 11 at the Moscone Center, and as a key supplier to the semiconductor industry, Swagelok Northern California will of course be tracking developments and technology considerations in support of this industry’s transition. You can join us to hear key industry players talk about what to expect, including the status of the Global 450mm Consortium, which includes IBM, Intel and Samsung, among others. The SEMICON West 450mm Transition Forum also will provide a review of key technology considerations and a discussion of implications and opportunities specifically for the supply chain.
