The Force is With Us, Always? Tuning Quantum Vacuum Forces from Attractive to Repulsive

Written by Jeff Hopkins | 7/8/19 4:00 PM

Two uncharged metal plates, if placed close together in a vacuum, will attract each other. Now physicists have shown that the force that causes this attraction, known as the Casimir force, can be made repulsive when certain materials are placed between the plates. The Casimir force can also be tuned or enhanced, depending on the properties of the material used.
