Ceramic aerogels are used for spacecraft heat shields because they are chemically stable and resistant to corrosion. However, they do not hold up well to dramatic temperature changes. A UCLA-led team has developed a lightweight ceramic aerogel that maintains its strength even when heated above 1,400 °C or repeatedly subjected to extreme temperature fluctuations.
