Avoiding the Crack of Doom

The high-strength composite materials used in such structures as airplane wings, wind-turbine blades, and artificial joints are subject to deformations like any other material. But in these critical components, deformations and fractures can lead to catastrophic failures. Since they can begin with just a few out-of-place molecules, researchers at National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) have developed a way to observe material strain at the single-molecule level.
